Bundilla Beach masterplan input sought after controversial temporary RV park proposal

Darwin Council is looking for community input into the development of a masterplan for Bundilla Beach, the lord mayor has said.

Kon Vatskalis said in a statement the plan would consider the area’s social, environmental, and cultural values, and would include short and longer-term possibilities for what he called the “under-utilised” beach reserve, and ideas from the public could be incorporated.

He said the first stage of development would be funded by $500,000 from the council, and $3 million from the NT government, with work expected to begin the dry season next year.

“For almost 20 years different ideas have been proposed for Bundilla Beach but what has been missing is a masterplan with a solid vision,” Mr Vatskalis said.

“Activating this valued part of Darwin will deliver a revitalised space for the community and visitors to enjoy our green spaces, with flow-on benefits for local businesses.”

The masterplan proposal has come after the council’s recent controversial plan for a temporary recreational vehicle park trial, where the council had agreed to find a potential operator through an expression of interest process, in spite of a survey conducted showing the majority of respondents in Darwin opposing the proposal.

However local MLA Brent Potter, who is a member of the Labor government, slammed the council’s proposal.

Community submissions to the Bundilla Beach masterplan close on July 13.
