The governance of the university, under the responsibility of the University Council, appears to have no responsibilty to students, staff or the taxpayer. As a self- perpetuating ‘Club’ on taxpayer largesse, its main loyalties appear to be to the members of the ‘Club’. Bad luck if you are a student or hard-working member of staff, or a tax-payer! All this has been laid bare recently by Senate enquiries – but who in the Council would have the time or interest to search for improvement in CDU governance, even though CDU problems are escalating rapidly?
In addition, standout problems identified by parliamentary enquiries into Council governance recently, have been the excessive salaries and perks paid to Vice Chancellors and the lack of Council transparency and accountability around such decisions Still, things like this probably take a while to reach those in authority in Darwin, to the further detriment of CDU. I mean, Darwin is different! The rest of Australia pays!
