A man has been arrested and charged for indecently assaulting a young girl inside an Alice Springs CBD shopping centre in broad daylight on Saturday, NT Police said.
The incident allegedly happened around 11am, the police media team said, but the public was not informed about the incident until Monday afternoon.
Police did not provide details on the girl’s condition following the assault or if she was at the shopping centre alone.
The suspect was arrested and charged later on Saturday, police said, but did not say how they located the 26-year-old.
There was no explanation as to why the incident was only publicly reported two days after it happened. On Saturday, police media manager Rob Cross was able to issue a statement about traffic offences in Mataranka, and another one about COVID breaches, but not the sexual assault of a child.
The 26-year-old man has been charged with one count of aggravated assault – indecent assault of a child under 16 years.
He remains in custody and was set to appear before the Alice Springs Local Court today.
