NT Police are investigating the second instance of skeletal remains being found in a week, after a person found “what appeared to be a human skull” 15km north of Katherine, police said.
Police provided no details about the discovery of the skull, including where exactly it was found, if there were other bones at the scene, how long the skull may have been at that location or if forensic experts had been called to the scene.
In a statement, police said they had attended the location north of Katherine and had declared a crime scene.
It did not appear linked to the discovery last week of skeletal remains at Lee Point beach in Darwin.
Police said at the time that a bushwalker had discovered a skull and other bones near the beach last Wednesday, which were being “painstakingly” examined by medical experts, including a forensic pathologist.
Police said the Katherine discovery was made on Tuesday afternoon.
“Police are seeking information from anyone with knowledge of this person’s death to contact police on 131 444. Please quote reference number 10135265,” police media manager Rob Cross said.
