Alice Springs teen barricaded himself in restaurant with weapon, allegedly assaulted police

An 18-year-old Alice Springs male, who allegedly breached a suspended sentence before barricading himself in a Todd Mall restaurant with a “blunt weapon” after police attempted to arrest him on Wednesday, later allegedly assaulted an officer, NT Police said.

Police said the incident occurred around 12:25pm on Wednesday, when officers “observed the 18-year-old as being in breach of a suspended sentence in the Todd Mall.

Additional police units were deployed to assist in the arrest, but the man fled into a nearby restaurant and armed himself with a blunt weapon after being approached, police said.

Restaurant customers and staff were evacuated prior to the suspect surrendering to officers following a “brief negotiation”.

Police alleged the man then kicked an officer in the leg while being taken into custody.

The 18-year-old was transported to Alice Springs Hospital for medical assessment and remains in police custody, with charges expected to follow, police said.
