Two women have been charged for an alleged sly grog operation from a Gillen home and placed on the NT’s banned drinkers register for three months, NT Police said.

The women, aged 29 and 46, were served notices to appear for the illegal sale of alcohol after police executed a search warrant on the home on Monday where they found alcohol and cash “believed to be related to the offending”.

The NT Government last month enacted strict alcohol restrictions in Alice Springs in response to the ongoing crime crisis in the town, that saw takeaway alcohol sales banned on Monday and Tuesday and other restrictions around quantity of alcohol purchased at one time.

The pair were also immediately placed on the banned drinkers register by the Southern Alcohol Policing Unit that investigates illegal liquor sales, which means they will not be able to purchase or consume alcohol for three months.

“The unit is currently embedded within Operation Drina and conducting activities to ensure compliance with the recent alcohol restrictions,” said Senior Sergeant Alex Brennan.

“The unauthorised sale of liquor is an offence punishable by three years imprisonment. Any person charged with an offence involving liquor are also subject to a banned drinker order.

“Operation Drina continues to actively target any anti-social behaviour within the community. To date, a total of 1828 litres of liquor has been seized and destroyed and a further 74 banning notices from the Alice Springs Liquor Act declared area.”

Police said anyone with information on the supply of alcohol or drugs to communities can call police on 131 444 or make an anonymous report to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
