A 53-year-old man is facing multiple drug charges after being pulled over south of Alice Springs on Wednesday morning where police allegedly found a quantity of meth, cannabis, Valium tablets and heroin.

Police said at 5:50am, the Drug and Organised Crime Unit apprehended the Ford Falcon 50km south of Alice Springs on the Stuart Highway where they discovered the various drugs, an “extendable baton” and items indicative of drug supply, including 8kg of cannabis, 1.5 grams of methamphetamine, 45 Valium tablets and one gram of heroin.

The man was arrested at the scene, with police later executing a search warrant on his Braitling residence where they found another 180 grams of cannabis, 43 Valium tablets, $4,910 in cash and more “items indicative of drug supply”.

“The supply of illicit substances into our community, particularly vulnerable remote areas, has a devastating effect,” said Detective Senior Sergeant Wayne Newell in a statement.

“Illicit substances are often a catalyst for domestic violence and property offences.

“This was fantastic work by investigators and I commend their efforts in removing this substance from our community. Police will continue to proactively disrupt the supply of drugs into the Territory.”

The 53-year-old man was charged with six drug offences as well as possessing tainted property and possessing a controlled weapon.

He was expected to front Alice Springs Local Court today.

“Anyone with information on the supply of alcohol or drugs to our communities can call police on 131 444 or make an anonymous report to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000,” Sgt Newell said.
