An NT Police operation to target domestic violence offenders with outstanding warrants has resulted in 80 arrests, police said, including 36 made in regional and remote areas since the beginning of September.

Operation Jardine was executed by all NT Police divisions and included arrests for rapists and kidnappers.

“This operation was a significant undertaking, and I commend all involved for their efforts in investigating and apprehending these offenders while maintaining a focus on general frontline duties,” said Acting Commander Matt Akers in a statement on Monday.

“The offences carried out by these alleged offenders range from sexual intercourse without consent, deprivation of liberty, aggravated assault, and breaches of domestic violence orders.

“It is of utmost importance to us that victims of domestic violence are protected. While this operation aimed to track down and arrest offenders, our officers also provided vital support to victims as well as continuing efforts to serve domestic violence orders.”

Cmmdr Akers added that police still have a tremendous amount of work to do in the DV space, with 719 domestic violence-related reports being filed with police over the past seven days alone.

“Enough is enough. There is no place for Domestic and Family Violence in our communities,” he said.

“If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic or family violence, please reach out by calling 131 444. In an emergency, call 000. You can also report anonymously through Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”
