Greens say some Beetaloo emission increases still need to be considered by federal ministerial council

The Federal Greens have said the Territory Government is breaking its promise to Territorians by lifting their moratorium on fracking without implementing all of the recommendations of the Pepper Inquiry, and said dealing with scope 2 and 3 domestic emissions from the project would still have to be considered by the Energy and Climate Ministerial Council.

The NT Government has approved Beetaloo fracking, despite its own report revealing it had not commenced emissions offset discussions with the Federal Government, offsets that could account for 22 per cent of Australia’s total emissions, while its independent oversight officer said the government had not met the Pepper Inquiry offsets recommendation and emissions remained “an unacceptable risk”.
