Firefighters prepare now for wet season disasters

The NT Fire and Rescue Service’s Special Operations Command is ramping up its preparations for natural disasters this wet season by focusing on critical specialised training, including deploying rapid temporary shelters in preparation for use in remote and regional areas and operating drones to survey disaster zones.

NTFRS Deputy Chief Fire Officer of Strategy and Capability, Stephen Hunter, said the special ops command will conduct essential training exercises over the next two weeks focused on equipping firefighters with the skills necessary to deploy command hubs and shelters effectively, thereby minimising risks to lives and property.

“When the Territory is challenged by floods and cyclones, the NTFRS supports the NT Emergency Service, NT Police and other government agencies, as well as volunteers and community members on the ground during response and clean-up operations.”

Mr Hunter said firefighters are among the first responders on the scene during disasters, quickly assessing damage to structures and utility services. To enhance their effectiveness, they are now receiving training in the deployment of large, rapid-setup shelters in various regional areas across the Territory.

Shelters facilitate quick mobilisation in disaster zones.

He said these shelters, which can accommodate up to 14 individuals, serve multiple purposes: they function as command centres for Incident Management Teams, medical triage stations, and hubs for community support and accommodation.

Measuring 7m by 7m, these tents are equipped with power supplies to support essential communication systems and facilitate the use of RPAS technology, commonly known as drones, in the field.

He said drones play a crucial role in assisting teams to locate survivors, evaluate structural damage, identify blocked roadways, and assess flood zones. The gathered information helps prioritise the allocation of government resources where they are needed most.

“By running this exercise, the NTFRS is in a better position to respond and support our colleagues in other agencies when we get the call-up to support Territory communities,” Mr Hunter said.
