NT Police are investigating after a man’s body was found on Casuarina Beach near the Surf Life Saving Club on Thursday morning.

It’s understood the police were alerted to the body around 7am, after a passerby walking his dog found the male lying on the sand in the middle of the beach.

Acting Sen Sgt Sonia Kennon said the body was found partially clothed and is believed to be an Aboriginal man, aged between 35 and 40.

She said it was unclear how long the body had been there but they suspect it was “only recently”.

“However, I cannot comment on the body at all,” Sen Sgt Kennon said.

By Thursday afternoon, police released a statement saying the death “does not appear suspicious at this stage”.

“The man’s identity and the circumstances leading to his death are still being investigated,” Sen Sgt Kennon said.

“We are continuing to call for witnesses to come forward.”

The beach reopened to the public just before 3pm.

The man discovered on the beach is the second body found near a waterway in the northern suburbs in as many weeks. On January 29, police found a 54-year-old Aboriginal man submerged in a small creek in Lyons, between the Royal Darwin Hospital and Garamanak Park on Damabila Drive. The body had been there two days, police said at the time, and ruled out foul play.

Anyone who may have been in the Casuarina beach area near the Surf Life Saving Club area on Wednesday night or early Thursday, or anyone with any other information, are being asked to contact police.
