Territorians told to be cautious, not fearful of rising Omicron sub-variant cases

The NT Government has advised Territorians to be vigilant as Covid-19 cases driven by the BA4 and BA5 Omicron variants spiked with 353 cases recorded overnight, placing active cases at 1,977 of which 19 are in hospital. No patients, however, are in the ICU.

Chief Minister Natasha Fyles said Territorians should remain vigilant and follow advice to prevent the spread of the virus where possible.

“The growing numbers of the BA4 and BA5 are a reminder to Territorians that while we have moved out of a State of Emergency and are moving away from the pandemic, COVID-19 has not left us,” Ms Fyles said.

Medical experts forecast COVID-19 hospitalisations to increase in the Territory in the coming weeks, but cases are not expected to equal those during the virus’ peak infection period in the Territory.

It was indicated by genomic surveillance that 35 per cent of the NT’s current COVID-19 cases are BA4 and BA5 variants.

The government said that high-risk category people should consult a medical professional to prepare a COVID-19 plan. People with existing health conditions, pregnant women and people aged over 65 years are considered at high-risk.

The spike in cases, the government said, is a timely reminder to stay up-to-date with vaccinations which are readily available at participating GP clinics, pharmacies, respiratory clinics and Aboriginal health clinics.

Those already infected with COVID-19 can get anti-viral treatment, the government said, and that they are most effective when taken within five days of showing symptoms.

Free Rapid Antigen Tests are available across the Territory through participating GP clinics, Aboriginal health clinics and remote health clinics. Test kits are also available in pharmacies and supermarkets.
